On November 25th 2014, the 4th annual Workplace Diversity Conference host by Aibai Culture & Education Center, sponsored by IBM, was held in Beijing. In addition to the traditional theme of workplace diversity from previous events, this conference also focused on the rise of pink economy in China.
During the conference, Lily Low, Vice President of IBM Greater China Group and Ambassador for LGBT Inclusion in IBM Greater China Group gave an opening remark on IBM’s value and strategy regarding LGBT diversity & inclusion and along with her strong personal support. She was followed by Jueding Ling, CEO of ZANK, and a gay social mobile APP company, who presented findings from a Gay Consumer Survey Report. The survey revealed the huge potential of the gay consumer market and identified some costumer behaviors. These findings provided convincing data and evidence of the pink dollars in China. Another guest speaker, Ping Liu, CEO of China Star Ltd., an International Destination Management Company shared her insights and knowledge of the growing gay travel market. Her personal story of getting involved in the gay travel business is inspiring. As part of the China Star brand, Rainbow Tour is one of the few travel package products in China specifically designed for the LGBT and PFLAG (Parents & Friends of Lesbians and Gays) communities.
Representatives from Goldman Sachs, Google China, Uniqlo, Uber and UN affiliates also participated in the event, and raised the discussion on how corporations can build an diverse and inclusive workplace for the LGBT community by sharing their own perspectives and experiences.
The conference received congratulatory video messages from leading global LGBT organizations including Stonewall UK and Out & Equal Workplace Advocate showing their encouragement and support for China. They also shared their long journey in fighting for equal rights of LGBT people at the workplace in their own countries, and provided practical tips and guidance for those who want to advance LGBT diversity and inclusion in their companies.
